Knobs & Pulls: Simple Replacement Tips

Loose and rattling Knobs and Pulls can be such a nuisance!  Maybe the knob just had enough of your constant turning and pulling and eventually gave up. That means it’s time to change that cranky Knob or Pull.

It’s not as difficult to change as you might think.  Costly repairmen will definitely over charge to replace something you can simply do yourself. 

Additionally, changing out the knobs or pulls on kitchen cabinets and doors can make a nice visual statement for a low and affordable cost, especially if you purchase them from CabinetParts.com (subtle, I know).

Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind when changing your Knobs and pulls:

First, check the number of screws needed, is it a locking or non-locking Knob, and measure the width of the door.

Next, choose a Knob or Pull from CabinetParts.com collection based on your measurements, style and specifications.

NOTE: Make sure you have the correct tools to change the Knob like a screwdriver, measuring tape, template for lining and the right size screws. 

Now for the Installation:

1.   Loosen the screw on the back of the door that holds the old knob in place, then remove the knob.

2.   When the screws are removed, make sure to grip both the inside and the outside knobs and pull apart from the door. Examine the door for any damage, especially the hole in which the knob has been removed from.

3.   Now, use your template for lining up standard holes at the side or bottom of the door.

4.   Mark and pre-drill your holes, and do this as accurately and carefully as possible.

5.   Once the correct alignment has been made, match the knob to its other half.  Tighten the screws, and your lock should be installed!

NOTE: Before putting your new knob or pull in place, fill any holes left by old hardware with wood putty, and paint that area for better fitting. 

So there you have it!  As you can see replacing an old Knob or Pull is a very simple process that won’t cost you labor and any unnecessary charge you might incur from an overpriced repairman.
