Soss History

During the past century, the Soss name has become the worldwide standard for invisible hinges, which began in 1903. A young Rumanian immigrant tripped and fell over a cargo hatch during an ocean voyage.   By the time the ship sailed into New York harbor, this young immigrant by the name of Joe Soss had built a prototype for the world's first invisible hinge.

He soon obtained a patent for his invention and established Soss manufacturing in New York.  To produce the hinges, Soss also developed the first die casting machine sold in North America.  Business boomed as Soss provided invisible hinges for popular companies such as Singer Sewing Machines, Otis Elevator, Burroughs Adding Machines, and Player Pianos became early customers. In addition the popular car maker Henry Ford used the hinge on the glove boxes of his early cars.

The invisible or sometimes called the concealed hinge also became widely used on jewelry cases, humidors, bookshelves that swing open to reveal hidden rooms, and even cargo holds on ship decks.

Eventually the clientele for Soss included notable establishments from the White House to Disneyland.  Over the years Soss grew into the leading invisible hinge provider for commercial buildings, government agencies, interior designers, engineers, and for personal households.  The Soss Company has stood solidly behind its products, and that includes the millions of hinges sold during the past century," said Neil Marko, great-grandson of the Joe Soss.

At Cabinetparts.com we are always at the ahead of the pack with new ideas!  As a web company who sells Cabinet Hardware, we tend to be more eclectic than regular corporate offices.

But sometimes we feel left out of the corporate shuffle when it comes to our attire.  There is nothing like wrinkles free business suit to make a man or woman feel powerful.  That’s why we came up with the concept of Dress Up Fridays!  We re-invented the casual Friday trend with one of our own.

Even though our campaign was just for one Friday, it turned out to be a massive success.  It was filled with fun and productivity had by all.

Couple of days ago it was stated that Cabinetparts.com donated to 2 charitable organizations.  We lied, but in a good way, we actually donated to 3!  The 3rd non-profit organization we donated to was Friends of WLRN Incorporated.

Friends of WLRN is a nonprofit organization, incorporated in 1974, whose purpose is to support WLRN Public Radio and Television.  Its purpose is to contribute to nurturing the quality and vitality of public media in South Florida.  Friends raises more than $6 million annually through individual giving by listeners, viewers, institutional on-air underwriting, and other grants and sponsorships from private individuals, corporations, and foundations.

WLRN is a FM radio station on 91.3 and is the main public radio station for Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Florida Keys.  It’s owned, operated, and licensed by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the city of Miami. It is South Florida’s main NPR (National Public Radio) member station.

The WLRN radio station signed on in 1948 as a non-profit, non-commercial broadcast station licensed to the School Board of Miami-Dade County.   In 1955 WLRN-TV a PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) member television station later followed.   Since its inception, WLRN has grown steadily to become an integral part of the community it serves.

The network offers a rich and varied mix of news, information, arts, culture, childhood education and lifelong learning.  In addition, the station also maintains its long-time radio reading service for the blind on an analog sub-carrier.

The vision of WLRN Public Radio and Television is to be a trusted, valued and supported public media in South Florida.  They state that: in a world full of the “ordinary”, we strive for the exceptional.

Following up from yesterdays post, today we are going to share a little bit about another awesome non-profit organization.   After our company wide vote at Cabinetparts.com, our employees decided on the American Cancer Society (ACS).

FACT: Cancer is second to Heart Disease as the leading cause of death in America.

It’s not a surprise this organization was chosen because some if not all of us has had a family member or friend battle with this disease. The American Cancer is a nationwide; community based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.

The mission statement for the ACS today states:
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

The ACS originally named the American Cancer Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC) was founded in 1913 by a group of prominent physicians and business leaders in New York City.  In those days having cancer was a death sentence, so much so that some doctors would avoid telling their patients because it was publicly feared.  Because of this, the ACS founders raised public awareness through newspapers, popular magazines, professional journals and they also recruited medical professionals across America.

Society-funded researchers have contributed to nearly every major cancer research breakthrough the ACS’s research program began. They’ve helped establish the link between cancer and smoking; demonstrated the effectiveness of the Pap test; developed cancer-fighting drugs and biological response modifiers such as interferon; dramatically increased the cure rate for childhood leukemia; proven the safety and effectiveness of mammography; and so much more.

All told, the American Cancer Society has invested approximately $3.5 billion in research, including giving 44 future Nobel Prize winners the recognition and funding they needed to get started.

In addition their advocacy efforts later contributed to the passage of the National Cancer Act in 1971, which granted special funds and authority to expand the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and revolutionized the war on cancer.

The ACS is supported by millions of members all over the US.  The ACS strives to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.  They help people stay well, get well by finding cures and by fighting back against cancer.

Today, the American Cancer Society is leading the fight against cancer, contributing $1 billion in resources annually to save lives.  Thanks in part to the Society’s work, there are 11 million cancer survivors alive in the United States alone. The ACS has helped create more than 300 birthdays each and every day just since the early 1990s.

They attest to not rest until no one – in the U.S. or around the world – will ever lose another birthday to cancer. Even if its just a 1 buck, we urge you to donate to the ACS today.

·         Try shopping during the day but if you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.

·         Do not carry large amounts of cash and avoid carrying a purse or wallet.  If you must carry a purse, be attentive especially in crowded areas.

·         Keep cash securely in your front pockets.

·         Stay alert to your surroundings and beware of strangers approaching you for any reason.

·         Avoid using cash.  Using a credit card is safer and it’s easier to keep track of purchases.

·         If your credit card is stolen, notify the company as soon as possible.

A stain functions by soaking into wood and bringing an element of color to that specific wood. It’s difficult to try and lighten a dark wood so it’s better to start with a wood containing hardly any color and work to darker levels from there.

Some of the lighter woods that you should consider purchasing for staining are: Oak, Maple, Birch, Ash, Beech, Elm and Chestnut.

Staining wood is an easy Do-It-Yourself project that most individuals can partake in, but there are some considerations to bear in mind before starting the staining process.

• Choose a water-based stain to avoid fumes. The advantage to water-based stains is that they come in a wide assortment of colors, compared to oil-based stains. 
• A water-based finish can be applied over an oil-based stain.  Wait 24 hours for all of the mineral spirits to evaporate from the oil-based stain before applying. 
• Apply stain with a brush or a rag. Staining brushes work with and against the grain.  Or you can use both.  Some individuals apply stain with a brush and wipe it off with a rag.
• Stain only provides color, not a finish. Always apply a finish on top of stained wood. Or, if time is short, reach for a product that combines both stain and finish with one coat. The product will need to be brushed on more carefully, finishing by brushing with the grain of the wood. Use a higher-quality brush with this type of stain/finish.
• For lighter tones wipe the stain off immediately.  For a deeper tone, leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes before wiping.  
• If you want the wood's grain to be seen, look for a transparent or semitransparent stains.

4. Pine and Maple woods have a light golden color and a fairly feeble grain pattern. They can also have special features like knots or other flaws that can make cabinets look more rustic. But these woods are very porous and can be hard to stain without creating streaks or blotches.

5. Wood Veneers are also an alternative option to solid lumber. Veneers are thin slices of real wood glued to an MDF or plywood base. Usually, cabinets made using this technique are much more stable and longer lasting than solid-wood units. They offer resistance to moisture and humidity.
